America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution. I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors in her fertile fields and boundless forests in her rich mines and vast world commerce in her public school system and institutions of learning. Self-government without self-dicipline doesn't work. It is ordained in the eternal constitution of things, that men of intemperate minds cannot be free. Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition to put moral chains upon their own appetites.Society cannot exist, unless a controlling power upon will and appetite be placed somewhere and the less of it there is within, the more there must be without. What is liberty without wisdom and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils for it is folly, vice, and madness, without restraint.

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
